MLK Day of Service

  • Various Locations

Come make a difference on the MLK Day of Service! This year, MLK Day coincides with Tu B'Shevat, the Jewish New Year for Trees, and a wonderful day to recommit to protecting our planet. There are multiple meaningful ways to participate in social justice and community service activities to honor the memory of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Tu B'Shevat.  If you are interested in joining with other Kavana partners and friends, we are focusing attention on two distinct events that align with our Jewish values of being good stewards of our environment, and standing up together in support of justice for all.  Please join us!  These events are family friendly, free, and you can come and go as need be.  (They may also count towards high school community service hours!)

Kubota Gardens work project

Monday, January 21st - 10 am - 1:30 pm
Kavana point person: Robin Schachter
Location:  Kubota Gardens Natural Area (9817 55th Avenue S., Seattle, 98118)

Kavana is pleased to join with The Jewish Federation, the Washington State Catholic Conference and the Archdiocese of Seattle to help restore the Kubota Gardens Natural Area in the South Seattle area. The Seattle Green Partnership (a joint project of Seattle City Parks and Forterra, a conservation organization,) will be leading us in this work, which will involve weeding, removing invasive species, tending to existing garden beds, and possibly planting trees and shrubs.

Children accompanied by adults are welcome.  Wear weather appropriate gardening clothes (plus your Kavana "BElieve THEre is GOOD in the World" T-shirt) and bring water/lunch.   We will work in all weather except high winds! Tools and project guidance will be provided.

From the Jewish Federation website:

In 2019, MLK Day coincides with Tu B'Shevat, a day in the Jewish calendar which asks us to consider the ecosystem of the planet and its many facets -- not only with the environment but with society as well. With all of the benefits and beauty of our global community, our planet and humanity still suffer.  Our hope for a better world must be vibrant.  This interfaith day of service will be an opportunity for us to come together, join hands, and work to create a better world.

If you are interested in joining us, PLEASE REGISTER directly on the Jewish Federation Site with this link, to ensure you get up to date information.

Feel free to contact Robin Schachter with questions, and to coordinate carpools, etc.

MLK Day - Rally and March:

Monday, January 21.  Rally at 11:00 am, March to start at 12:30 pm.

We are looking for a Kavana point person!  Are you planning to attend the Rally and/or March? Would you like to carry the Kavana banner and meet Kavana partners and friends?  Please let Rabbi Josh know!

The Seattle MLK Coalition organizes a day of workshops, a rally and a March, starting at Garfield High School.  In the past, we have informally gathered at the Rally and carried the Kavana banner in the March.  Let's show up for our community!

Here is the link to the full schedule of workshops and information on the Rally, with maps and the March route: www.seattlemlkcoalition.org

If you plan to attend, please let us know so that we can keep you posted on where our group will try to meet.
